Preperation

Wow, its been a long time since my last post, I have been so busy with life that I have not had a chance to sit down and write something, however many days I have thought about certain topics I wanted to write about but never got around to it…so here goes!

There are now 9 days until I am embarking on a 4 day mountain bike race, this crazy event stretches 221 km of Western Australia’s South West, its called the Cape 2 Cape Mountain Bike Race, the race is attracting 2000 competitors and will be a mix of Cross Country and Downhill with some ugly climbs as well.

I am travelling with mates (who also conned me into going) and the last couple of weeks we have been planning and gathering spare parts etc. As the ride gets closer we are all getting a bit nervous, Matt doesn’t show it but I know he is also crapping in his pants 😉

Whilst the other guys are nervous about the km’s and the tracks and the disgusting hill climb on day 1 which is sure to cause some pain at the end of the day! I have not really even thought about all that, all I can think about is Diabetes management strategies.

Over the last few months I have been playing with different insulins and different insulin strategies as well as various supplement methods pre, during and post exercise, I have not yet discovered the perfect model but have come close a few times…what worries me the most is the fact that all my races or endurance events have been in one hit, never over 4 days so ensuring my insulin and my nutrition is perfect each day is critical to me actually completing each days stage, T1D has so many influencing factors that each strategy has a multitude of what if’s…

On a Low Carb diet, food to replenish the lost muscle glycogen from the each days stage is the key, just eating fat and protein alone will not be sufficient to replenish quick enough, so I am will be winging it with the tools and knowledge I have under my belt lycra to make this work and man I am going to make sure I enjoy ever minute of it, maybe enjoy is not the right word…embrace every minute of it!!
